Mayor Johnson's housing plan wins initial approval after changes in response to opposition

Milwaukee’s revised Housing Element plan, backed by Mayor Johnson, earned Plan Commission approval after removing duplex recommendations in single-family zones. The plan still promotes diverse, affordable housing options, including accessory dwelling units (ADUs), despite opposition from some East Side residents. It now awaits final approval from the Common Council.

Get ready to celebrate in the heart of South Milwaukee with a weeklong lineup of fun and community spirit during Heritage Week, taking place from Sunday, July 20 through Sunday, July 27, 2025. The festivities kick off on July 20 with the Friends of Grant Park Art Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grant Park Area 5A pavilion. On Monday, July 21, join the D.A.R.E. Golf Outing. Tuesday, July 22 brings two special events: the Ice Cream Social paired with a concert by the South Milwaukee Municipal Band, as well as the Veterans Appreciation Dinner. On Wednesday, July 23, grab a bite at the South Milwaukee Fire Department Brat Fry. Don’t miss the South Milwaukee Farmers Market on Thursday, July 24, running from 3 to 7 p.m. at 11th and Milwaukee Avenues, featuring fresh produce, crafts, baked goods, music, and more. The excitement continues on Friday, July 25 with the 2025 Car Cruise, followed by the always popular Lionsfest from July 25 through 27. And on Saturday, July 26, gather along the streets for the beloved Heritage Days Parade. With something for everyone, this week is a true celebration of the South Milwaukee community.
